On October 29, the International Assembly of Migrants and Refugees, in Manila for an alternative gathering to the Philippine-government sponsored Global Forum on Migration and Development, held a protest action to denounce forced migration and to call for the creation of jobs at home. That day, 10,000 migrant members of the International Migrants Alliance Also refused to send remittances as a symbolic protest against the systematic exploitation of migrants by governments and big businesses. The migrants also held a Speak Out at the Bonifacio Shrine later in the afternoon to share their stories of life and struggle.
Workers of up to 40 years of service in Kowloon House, a known Chinese restaurant in Metro Manila, launched a strike last September 16 to protest non-payment of wages and the illegal dismissal of 73 union members. Please read my Pinoy Weekly article entitled “Kanila ang 11 araw na benta ng siopao.”
Last June 10, around 3,500 farmers from Southern Tagalog, Bicol, and Central Luzon marched to Mendiola to protest the extension of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program, which expired that day.
